Why this morning matters

Mahalaya, in three moments

মহালয়া — স্মৃতি, সুর ও আগমনীর আবহ

01

A bridge between two seasons

Mahalaya marks the close of Pitru Paksha and, in Bengali cultural tradition, heralds Devi Paksha — the emotional beginning of the journey toward Durga Puja.

02

A dawn ritual for generations

For many Bengali families, Mahalaya begins before sunrise with the familiar soundscape of Mahishasura Mardini — recitation, narration and music woven into a shared annual ritual.

03

From Bengal to Franken

Even far from home, the morning carries the same anticipation: Maa is coming. For us in Franken, Mahalaya is where that feeling begins to turn into our community celebration.

A shared memory

The Mahalaya morning

Before the city is fully awake, radios and phones begin playing a voice generations recognise. Homes become quiet for a while. The familiar invocation returns. And somewhere between memory and anticipation, the countdown to Durga Puja truly begins.

আশ্বিনের শারদপ্রাতে বেজে উঠুক আগমনীর সুর — মা আসছেন।
